When Josh Lindke took over the football program at Toledo St. Francis de Sales, he didn\u2019t inherit a team \u2014 he inherited a cautionary tale. The program hadn\u2019t won a game in over two years. Morale was non-existent. Facilities needed work. Worst of all, no one wanted the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, this is precisely where Coach Lindke, with unwavering courage and determination, chose to plant his flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the world of American high school football, many coaches dream of landing the \u201cright job\u201d \u2014 a school with resources, tradition, and talent. But Lindke flipped that mentality on its head. He didn\u2019t look for the right job. He made<\/em> it the right job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you’re going to be a leader, you’re going to be one that’s in the trenches \u2014 that’s where trust is built.\u201d \u2014 [29:04]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebuilding Culture in a Program That Had None<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first step wasn’t installing a new offense or chasing wins. It was about identity. Coach Lindke understood that turning around a football program means starting with culture \u2014 creating an environment where young athletes feel valued, challenged, and united.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized belief. Not in slogans, but in action \u2014 accountability, effort, and building a brotherhood that transcended the scoreboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to create a place where people want to be. You\u2019ve got to be the destination.\u201d \u2014 [26:20]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This mindset turned an overlooked program into something compelling, a beacon of hope in the community. Lindke leveraged everything \u2014 upgraded gear, refreshed branding, and a relentless energy to shift perception. The school went from begging kids to join the team to becoming a legitimate option for football families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trial by Fire: The Reality of Being a Young Head Coach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many young coaches believe ambition and X’s and O’s are enough. Lindke quickly learned otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He got the job at 27. Enthusiastic? Absolutely. Ready? Not entirely. The reality of leadership came fast and hard \u2014 managing players, parents, alumni, media, and administrative expectations \u2014 all while trying to change the course of a sinking ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re young, you think it\u2019s all about ball. But when you get the job, you find out 90% of it isn\u2019t football at all.\u201d \u2014 [19:48]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience matured him quickly. He leaned into mentorship, surrounded himself with strong assistants, and treated each failure as a feedback loop. That trial by fire forged the toughness he needed \u2014 and his players followed suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Find the Right Job \u2014 Make It the Right Job<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Too often, coaches chase the perfect situation. But Lindke\u2019s journey reveals the power of ownership. Instead of waiting for someone else to build the culture, he built it brick by brick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He got alumni involved. He revitalized traditions. He made the weight room a sanctuary. Over time, the program stopped making excuses and started creating standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lesson? The right job isn\u2019t discovered. It\u2019s developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s exactly what Coach Lindke did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
