They&#8217;re not only looking at your scheme, your game plan, or the points you\u2019ve put on the scoreboard. They&#8217;re asking, <em>\u201cWho have you helped become better\u2014on and off the field?\u201d<\/em> Because in today\u2019s coaching landscape, <strong>your players are your best resume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-developing-players-builds-career-equity\"><strong>Developing Players Builds Career Equity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Too many coaches chase the next job title or higher level, but Sam Sewell, Assistant Special Teams Coach for the Arizona Cardinals, argues that the real focus should be on something deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, far more should be put into career equity,\u201d Sewell explained. \u201cAnd what career equity is to me, it&#8217;s how much you&#8217;re pouring into your players.\u201d <em>(01:05)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiring decision-makers don\u2019t just scan your accolades\u2014they listen for stories that demonstrate how you\u2019ve impacted lives. Those stories showcase your values, your influence, and your leadership style. Anyone can put \u201cAll-Conference\u201d or \u201cTop 25 Offense\u201d on a r\u00e9sum\u00e9. But when a coach tells a story about helping a player find his identity beyond football or graduate when no one thought he would, that\u2019s memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-a-reputation-that-travels\"><strong>Building a Reputation That Travels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In coaching, your reputation travels faster than your resume ever will. Especially at higher levels, where players switch teams, and relationships matter more than paper credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople forget stats and numbers very, very fast&#8230;but what they remember are stories,\u201d said Sewell. \u201cThey want to hear if you can talk about how you&#8217;ve developed players, how you&#8217;ve helped them grow, how you&#8217;ve gotten more out of them than they thought was even in there.\u201d <em>(02:00)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get hired, your player development must be authentic\u2014and it must show. Coaches talk. Players talk. And when hiring committees ask around, they\u2019ll find out if your influence is real or rehearsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Sewell emphasizes the importance of living what you preach. Your daily actions\u2014the conversations in your office, how you coach during walkthroughs, and whether your players gravitate toward you\u2014paint the clearest picture of your impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-small-moments-big-impact\"><strong>Small Moments, Big Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the strongest resume lines don\u2019t come from games\u2014they come from life. Sewell recalled a former player who had to medically retire and called him, broken, unsure of who he was without football. It didn\u2019t make a highlight reel. But it reflected the heart of a coach committed to developing people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiring coaches want to know what kind of man you are in moments like those. Your ability to show you care, to be consistent, and to invest in your players as human beings\u2014not just athletes\u2014is what sets you apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-it-visible\"><strong>Make It Visible<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your players are your best resume, don\u2019t hide it. When you&#8217;re interviewing, tell the stories. Show the growth. Talk about the relationships.
