In football, the offense doesn\u2019t wait\u2014and neither can your defense. To stay ahead, defensive coordinators must run an in-game workflow that\u2019s fast, adaptable, and precise. At Folsom High School, Defensive Coordinator Jordan Irsik has built that system, changing the way his team gathers information, communicates, and adjusts on the fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He moved past the days of clipboards and clunky spreadsheets. Now, Folsom operates with live tagging and instant replay tools that deliver the data coaches need\u2014when they need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTyping is just not a sustainable way to tag in a game and get information charted,\u201d<\/strong> Irsik said. \u201cWe switched to modern football technology a couple of years ago.\u201d<\/strong> (04:58)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build It Before the Game Starts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Irsik doesn\u2019t wait for kickoff to build communication. He installs it during practice. Using tablets and AirPods, Folsom\u2019s coaches simulate live tagging during team periods. One coach calls out formation and personnel. Another taps the play into a preloaded system. They run this every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach speeds up decision-making and wipes out the guesswork. There\u2019s no need for mental math or scribbled-down notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe guy that\u2019s tagging doesn\u2019t have to mark D and D gain loss\u2026 This is now doing the math for you.\u201d<\/strong> (07:21)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each coach owns a role. The staff charts plays in real time, so Irsik can see trends and issues right after a series ends\u2014not at halftime or after the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjust During the Game\u2014Not After<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once the defense gets off the field, the staff pulls up reports instantly. They don\u2019t guess what worked\u2014they see it. Irsik checks which calls held up and which ones broke down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe always look at four or less than four yards on first and 10\u2026 That\u2019s what we deem as efficient in our system.\u201d<\/strong> (08:36)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a call loses its edge, Irsik doesn\u2019t wait. He changes the pitch. The fastball gets shelved. The curve or strikeout call comes in. That flexibility helps the defense take momentum back before the offense finds its rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These quick shifts often lead to big stops\u2014and set the tone for the rest of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes Folsom\u2019s workflow effective isn\u2019t just the tech\u2014it\u2019s the structure. Every part of their process, from practice scripts to in-game charts, exists to give coaches clean data and clear choices. The staff doesn\u2019t chase more information\u2014they use the right information faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irsik designed the system to eliminate delay, confusion, and inefficiency. The result? A defense that adjusts with purpose and wins with consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
