You build it during the unnoticed moments\u2014when you\u2019re breaking down film late, setting up the field before anyone else shows up, or helping a player push through a tough practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Coach Adam Harvey put it:

The assistants who move up don\u2019t just show up\u2014they bring something extra. Head coaches notice more than you think. Here\u2019s what they\u2019re really watching, and how you can start earning more trust and responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Gets a Coach Noticed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adam Harvey, head coach at Long Creek (TX), knows exactly what to look for when deciding who\u2019s ready to lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He starts with dependability. He needs assistants who follow through, handle their roles without being reminded, and bring purpose to every task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho can I count on? Who also has taken initiative to do things that just need to be done without me telling them? That is huge.\u201d<\/strong> (01:32)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reliability sets the floor. Energy raises the ceiling. Whether you’re organizing scout team cards or watching film, your attitude tells the staff what kind of coach you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want more responsibility, don\u2019t wait for permission. Take control of your current role. Do the small things with pride, especially when no one\u2019s watching. That\u2019s how you show you\u2019re invested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking Initiative Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coaches who move up don\u2019t wait\u2014they act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keith Grabowski, now a podcast host, talked about his early years on staff. He used to join the head coach during lunch film sessions, quietly taking notes and learning the system. That consistent effort helped him land a coordinator role just one year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Harvey shared a similar moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went back, sat down with my head ball coach\u2026 and said, \u2018Hey, what about this? I think we can implement this.\u2019 It was a really good conversation because then he felt like he could trust me more.\u201d<\/strong> (04:31)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These kinds of actions don\u2019t draw attention. They don\u2019t rely on big speeches or flash. They come from preparation, awareness, and a genuine desire to help the program grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promoting Yourself\u2014Without Being \u201cThat Guy\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Younger coaches often hold back, afraid that speaking up will look like self-promotion. But Harvey sees it differently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything is self-promotion. It\u2019s about how you do it.\u201d<\/strong> (06:33)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need to talk about yourself\u2014just let your actions speak clearly.
Be the first one there. Stay after practice. Offer ideas in meetings because they improve the team, not because you want credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The staff won\u2019t elevate you for being loud\u2014they\u2019ll elevate you for being consistent, dependable, and committed to the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final Thought: Earn Trust Before You Earn a Title<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head coaches pay attention to more than just results. They watch how you carry yourself every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you bring energy, consistency, and initiative to your role, you earn trust. That trust leads to new opportunities\u2014and eventually, to a promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t chase a title. Prove through your work that you\u2019re already ready for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promotions aren\u2019t handed out. You earn them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
