In football coaching, it’s tempting to think your next job depends on flashy play calls or viral moments. But talk to any head coach, and you\u2019ll hear a different story\u2014one about trust. For assistant coaches trying to move up, reliability carries more weight than flash ever will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything moves at the speed of trust,\u201d says Indiana State running backs coach Jalen Banks (01:24).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust Matters More Than Talent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Knowing the game gets you in the building. Trust keeps you there. Banks worked his way up from an unpaid intern to a full-time college coach by proving he could be counted on. Coaches weren\u2019t just watching what he knew\u2014they watched how he handled the work no one sees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou gotta own your responsibility\u2026 do it with great detail\u2026 like you got to sign off on it at the end of the day.\u201d (01:42)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s how trust is built: by nailing the small things. Every scout card, every film cutup\u2014it all matters. And the coaches who move forward are the ones who treat it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promotions Follow Trust, Not Hype<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Flash fades. Trust sticks. Banks showed up every day as a volunteer intern. No paycheck. No spotlight. Just relentless consistency. He made himself useful in any way possible\u2014spinning music at practice, planning recruiting calls, hauling equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI tried to be the best practice DJ that existed\u2026 I loaded and unloaded EQ trucks like I was trying to be an All-American at it.\u201d (04:15)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mindset told everyone around him, You can count on me.<\/em> And in coaching, that\u2019s what moves you up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Stand Out Without Shouting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When things get hectic, head coaches don\u2019t look for flash\u2014they look for someone they trust. Banks tells young assistants to take initiative, see the next step before it\u2019s said, and solve problems without being asked. Every day is a chance to prove you\u2019re ready for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your habits become your r\u00e9sum\u00e9. Show up. Stay sharp. Do the job like it matters\u2014because it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be the one who\u2019s present, prepared, and dependable, even when the task feels minor. Add value when you speak. Bring energy and pride to everything you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banks keeps it simple: \u201cBe consistent. Be prepared. Be the coach others count on when it matters most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
