Every offensive coordinator faces the same question: how much is too much?<\/em> The urge to install every play and concept you\u2019ve ever learned is strong. But in today\u2019s game, it\u2019s not complexity that separates good offenses from great ones\u2014it\u2019s clarity. Without a clear filter for what fits your system, you\u2019re not building execution; you\u2019re inviting confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason Espinosa, Offensive Coordinator at DePauw University, understands this deeply. His approach revolves around intentionality\u2014from how he installs, to how he trims, and most importantly, how he teaches. If you want your offense to play fast, efficient, and confident, filtering is not optional. It\u2019s essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offensive Filters Guide Better Teaching<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of any successful system is a clear teaching progression. Espinosa emphasizes the importance of having a consistent filter to guide what gets installed\u2014and more importantly, what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe really try to teach from a quarterback-first perspective and build the offense around the quarterback\u2019s eyes. That\u2019s the filter we use.\u201d (16:44)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teaching through that lens keeps your install process simple and connected. It also reinforces decision-making consistency across the offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Espinosa breaks teaching into four categories: rhythm throws, reset throws, reaction throws, and off-platform. This structure gives players repeatable frameworks to solve problems during live action, not just in the film room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installing With a Purpose<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Coaches often mistake volume for preparedness. Espinosa flips that mindset. His offense doesn\u2019t install everything just because it worked on film or because they repped it in spring. Each concept has to serve the overall filter\u2014and fit the quarterback\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don’t put in everything we worked in the spring. We\u2019ll always come back to: does it fit our philosophy? Can the quarterback own it?\u201d (21:05)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question becomes the gatekeeper for installation. If it doesn’t meet the standard, it doesn\u2019t make the cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This filter-driven install process reduces mental clutter and accelerates reps where they matter most. The players don\u2019t just learn plays\u2014they internalize concepts that connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trimming to Streamline Execution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Offensive bloat kills tempo and player confidence. Espinosa believes in pruning just as aggressively as planting. During the season, he regularly evaluates what stays and what gets shelved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven during the year, we’re constantly evaluating. If something\u2019s not hitting the way it needs to, or the quarterback’s not comfortable, we move off it.\u201d (25:42)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That discipline creates an adaptable offense without becoming a chaotic one. It also reinforces to players that everything in the game plan matters\u2014and that their feedback matters, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want your offense to play faster, make better decisions, and develop quarterback trust, start with a filter. Use it to guide your teaching. Let it determine what gets installed. And don\u2019t be afraid to trim anything that doesn\u2019t belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filtering isn\u2019t about limiting your playbook. It\u2019s about maximizing what matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
