If you want to connect with today\u2019s players, it starts with something simple: be yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, coaches have tried to fit a certain mold. They\u2019d echo what their mentors said, raise their voices in the locker room, and act like what they thought a \u201creal coach\u201d should be. But times have changed. The next generation of athletes doesn\u2019t respond to showmanship or titles. They respond to honesty. They respond to purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust being yourself\u2026 letting the kids see who you are\u2026 I think players are smart enough to realize if you’re genuine or not, and if you’re not genuine, they don\u2019t want to play for you.\u201d \u2013 Robby Discher (35:24)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s athletes don\u2019t just want direction\u2014they want understanding. Why are we doing this drill? Why does this matter on game day? And most importantly, how does this help me<\/em> get better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coaches who lean into those questions\u2014the ones who coach with purpose, not ego\u2014are the ones building real trust and long-term success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authenticity Isn\u2019t a Buzzword\u2014It\u2019s the Standard<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t fake it anymore. Players pick up on everything\u2014your tone, your body language, your consistency. If you\u2019re putting on a show, they\u2019ll see right through it. And once that trust cracks, it\u2019s hard to get back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think people do it wrong when they come into day one meetings and say, ‘I’ve done this, I’ve done that.’ Relationships in that room happen over time, and they\u2019ve got to trust you and believe in you and know you care about them.\u201d \u2013 Robby Discher (37:33)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is, players aren\u2019t looking for a perfect coach\u2014they\u2019re looking for a real one. They want to know that the person leading them is consistent, genuine, and fully invested. When they see that version of you every day\u2014someone who\u2019s prepared, who cares, and who shows up with purpose\u2014they\u2019ll buy in. They\u2019ll give you everything they\u2019ve got. But you can\u2019t fake it. You have to earn that trust by being authentic, not by trying to play a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach the \u2018Why\u2019 to Build True Buy-In<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause I said so\u201d doesn\u2019t cut it anymore. Today\u2019s athletes want to understand the purpose behind what they\u2019re doing. And that\u2019s not a challenge\u2014it\u2019s a chance to lead better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best coaches don\u2019t shy away from questions. They lean into them. Every drill, every meeting, every walkthrough is a moment to connect the dots and show how the work fits into the larger plan. When players understand the why, they don\u2019t just go through the motions\u2014they commit. And that\u2019s where real progress begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen me and you were in high school, we never asked like, \u2018Why are we doing this?\u2019 Our coach told us to do it and we just did it. But that\u2019s not the case now\u2026 Showing the why, and how it helps our team\u2014but also how it helps you\u2014that\u2019s important.\u201d \u2013 Robby Discher (33:01)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When players understand why<\/em> they\u2019re doing something, they start to own it. That\u2019s when effort goes up. Execution improves. The team starts to grow from the inside out\u2014because they believe in what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consistency Builds Culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The power of being yourself doesn\u2019t stop with relationships\u2014it\u2019s the foundation of your culture. When you show up the same way every day, your players learn what accountability really looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robby Discher talks about how much he values the first 10\u201315 minutes he gets with the team each day. For him, that\u2019s the Super Bowl. That\u2019s where standards are set. That\u2019s where tone is established. And it\u2019s where leadership happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That kind of approach spreads. When players see you operating with clarity and purpose, they start doing the same. It stops being a speech and starts becoming part of who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final Thought: The Best Thing You Can Be Is You<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need to be the loudest coach in the room. You don\u2019t need to copy someone else’s style. The thing that\u2019s going to carry your team\u2014and your career\u2014is your ability to lead with honesty and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be real with your players. Let them see that you care. Explain the purpose behind the work. And above all, show up consistently\u2014because trust is built when players know who\u2019s showing up every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They don\u2019t need a character. They need a coach. And the most powerful thing you can bring to the team\u2026 is you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
