Coaching Coverage from the Inside Out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Jay Harbaugh, now the Special Teams Coach for the Seattle Seahawks, effective coverage begins where few coaches start \u2014 with the specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not really a question of how you like to cover first,\u201d Harbaugh said. \u201cIt\u2019s what can your kicker and punter do \u2014 and how do you tailor your coverage to that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That principle drives how Harbaugh builds his coverage units. The hang time, direction, consistency, and placement ability of the specialists define how the other ten players are coached. A unit tied to field landmarks or ball landmarks must operate within the limits of its kicker or punter\u2019s consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf your guy can\u2019t consistently put it in one place,\u201d Harbaugh added, \u201chaving your players tied to field landmarks can be dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foundation: Know What Your Specialists Can Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first phase of coverage planning is understanding what your specialists do well \u2014 not in
theory, but in measurable traits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Hang time and distance: Set the rhythm and spacing of your coverage lanes to establish a consistent approach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Direction and consistency: Dictate whether you can play landmark-based or ball-based coverage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Preferences: Even within ability, kickers and punters have styles they\u2019re more confident executing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Harbaugh emphasizes that performance isn\u2019t just physical \u2014 it\u2019s also psychological. Specialists, like any player, perform best when their preferences align with the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Next Layer: Know What Your Cover Guys Can Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Once the specialists\u2019 capabilities are clear, Harbaugh moves to the coverage unit. Who are they \u2014 and what do they do best?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Speed vs. Power: Are they explosive, fast players who win with quickness, or heavier-footed players who rely on strength and leverage?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Mindset: Are they \u201chair-on-fire\u201d players who thrive in chaos, or processors who need clear reads and keys?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Match Quality: The Seahawks utilize the concept of match quality \u2014 how well a player\u2019s skill set aligns with the role they\u2019re asked to play.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWe move guys around a lot,\u201d Harbaugh explained. \u201cBut we\u2019re always aware of where we\u2019re putting them and what we\u2019re asking them to do. We want the best match between ability and assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Managing Mental Load<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Harbaugh uses a vivid analogy to describe how he manages the mental workload of players: the size of their plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Veteran special teams players have \u201cdinner plates\u201d \u2014 they can handle more responsibility and complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Younger players often have \u201csaucers\u201d \u2014 smaller plates, smaller loads. It\u2019s the coach\u2019s job to know the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cYou can\u2019t overload a young guy who\u2019s still learning, and you can\u2019t under-challenge your vets,\u201d Harbaugh said. \u201cYou have to make sure every player can succeed in the role you give them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Main Course or the Dessert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Not every player sees special teams the same way.
      Some players, particularly backups and specialists, view special teams as the main course \u2014 their primary role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Others, especially offensive or defensive starters, view it as the dessert \u2014 essential but secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Harbaugh doesn\u2019t fight that reality; he coaches to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cYou have to be aware of how much dessert you\u2019re asking that guy to have,\u201d he joked. \u201cFor some, it\u2019s their main job. For others, it\u2019s a compliment. The point is to meet them where they are and still set them up for success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Know What You\u2019re Defending \u2014 and What You\u2019re Inviting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Great coverage teams know both what they\u2019re stopping and what they\u2019re inviting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • What are you defending? Vertical returns? Perimeter returns? Counter or reverse returns?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • What are you inviting? Every scheme leaves a space. Aggressive cross-face units might invite counter or field returns. Passive edge units might invite bounce or cutback lanes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Harbaugh believes coaches should communicate these tradeoffs directly with players \u2014 not just staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \u201cIt\u2019s no different than telling a defensive back the stress points of Cover 3,\u201d he said. \u201cYour coverage unit should know exactly what you\u2019re giving up so they can play faster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
