He grounds his philosophy in accountability, courage, and clarity, guiding players to attack space and time with purpose.<br>Kickoff is the first play of defense. We want our defense on the field hot\u2014with energy and intent. It starts with that first rep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The mission:<\/strong> eliminate penalties, control field position, and attack precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Team Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No penalties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep ball in bounds \u2014 no free yards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opponent starts \u2264 25-yard line (touchback or better)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kickoff return defense \u2264 18 yards per return<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggressive mentality: courage + accountability on every rep<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to be courageous to run full speed without knowing what\u2019s coming. You also have to be accountable \u2014 because everyone\u2019s job ties together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Relationship-Based Coverage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Schoonover coaches kickoff coverage as relationship-based, not landmark-based. Every player&#8217;s alignment and path depend on the spacing between teammates rather than the yard lines or hashes.<br>This approach builds cohesion and communication, ensuring the coverage wave stays intact regardless of the return scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about relationships. That\u2019s where you constrict the field.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Combat Zone (~30 to ~20-yard line)<\/strong><br>Physical contact begins\u2014blockers meet coverage players head-on.<br>Emphasis shifts from speed to power and leverage.<br>Players must \u201ctake conflict head on\u201d \u2014 no avoidance, no drifting.<br>\u201cIn the combat zone, you can\u2019t avoid anymore. You have to take problems head-on and be firm.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Finish Zone (Inside the 20-yard line)<\/strong><br>Final five to ten yards where plays are made.<br>Focus: finishing tackles, forcing turnovers, and surrounding the ball.<br>Mentality: pursuit, swarm, and precision.<br>\u201cThis is where we make plays. When players understand where they are on the field, they play faster and finish stronger.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Teaching Time and Space<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Schoonover\u2019s kickoff coverage coaching football philosophy centers on time and space awareness\u2014knowing how much time to close the distance and control the space.<br>\u201cEvery team has that one kid who\u2019s not the best athlete but always finds a way to make plays on special teams.
