Coach Eric Jendryzak, head coach at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), shared some of the methods that have driven his team\u2019s success this season. From efficient practice sessions to smart game day management, his approach highlights how making the most of limited time can lead to big results. Here\u2019s a closer look at the standout strategies that set TCNJ apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Service\u201d Team Sessions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of Coach Jendryzak\u2019s most interesting strategies revolves around how he runs team sessions. Instead of relying on a scout team to simulate upcoming opponents, he chooses to keep practice competitive and realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t call it scout when we do our team sessions. We do all of our team sessions in service,\u201d Jendryzak explained. \u201cWhen the defense is up, they go against our two offense, and then we circle back so we get the good versus good in every team session.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This method ensures high-level competition during practice, pushing players to prepare at game speed. It also helps maintain energy and engagement, as players face off against each other instead of a simulated scout team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simulating Game Scenarios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another essential element of Jendryzak\u2019s practice structure is incorporating in-game scenarios. He regularly integrates situations like third-and-long, fourth downs, and two-point plays into team sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe practice our two-point plays every week, and it\u2019s paid off several times already this season,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By preparing for these high-pressure moments during practice, Jendryzak\u2019s players gain the confidence to execute under similar conditions in real games. This approach eliminates surprises and prepares the team to capitalize when those opportunities arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special Teams Reps Early in Practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jendryzak also shared his unique way of starting practice with special teams drills. He schedules special teams right after the dynamic warm-up to simulate the start of a football game. This rhythm allows players to experience the natural ebbs and flows of a real game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOften, we\u2019ll do field goal or field goal block because we want the majority of the team to be stagnant,\u201d Jendryzak said. \u201cThen, we go right into a good versus good or a drive drill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach helps players learn to adjust intensity, preparing them for the stop-start nature of a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efficient Game Day Management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On game day, Jendryzak focuses on communication and time management. He makes sure his coordinators are in the best possible situations, maximizing the effectiveness of timeouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI try to make sure every game that I\u2019m utilizing those three timeouts in the first half to the best of my ability,\u201d Jendryzak emphasized. \u201cI don\u2019t want to go into halftime with unused timeouts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also keeps an eye on the defensive line, ensuring they stay fresh throughout the game. This proactive approach to game management reflects his commitment to seizing every opportunity, rather than saving resources for the final moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emphasizing Complementary Football<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At TCNJ, Coach Jendryzak places a strong emphasis on playing complementary football, where both offense and defense work together to control the game. He prioritizes a high-tempo offense and relies on the defense to create opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur goals are to play as fast as possible and get as many snaps,\u201d he said. \u201cThe defense\u2019s job is to provide those opportunities, ideally through three-and-outs or turnovers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This focus has allowed TCNJ to maintain a cohesive game plan that keeps opponents on the defensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Jendryzak\u2019s methods demonstrate that successful coaching isn\u2019t about complex schemes or overwhelming resources.
