They believed that if practices were tough enough, their teams would become \u201ctougher.\u201d But Brad Dixon, head coach at Camp Point Central (IL), challenges that outdated mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToughness is task-specific,\u201d Dixon argues. \u201cIt\u2019s not a bunch of random hard stuff. Toughness is precision and execution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of relying on conditioning for conditioning&#8217;s sake, Dixon focuses on what actually matters\u2014speed, recovery, and preparing players for the demands of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Outdated Conditioning Drains Athletes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Football games are explosive. Each play lasts just <strong>4 to 6 seconds<\/strong>, followed by a <strong>30-second rest<\/strong>. Yet, many teams train with gassers, bear crawls, and endless laps. Dixon remembers those days:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe buried the kids right off the bat. Day two was bad. Day three was even worse,\u201d he says. Players didn\u2019t improve\u2014they simply tried to survive. Instead of getting better, they grew tired, slow, and beaten down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/coachandcoordinator.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/riverside_copy_of-brad-dixon-sbf_coach_and-coordinat.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Precision Over Punishment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dixon eliminated pointless punishment drills and shifted to sprint-based practices. His athletes train with purpose: they sprint, recover, and build real game-day fitness. Dixon trusts the process because the results speak for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you destroy kids day after day, they hold back in practice. They\u2019re just trying to survive, not improve,\u201d Dixon explains. By focusing on recovery, his team peaks when it matters\u2014on Friday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toughness Comes From Preparation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Football players need precision, not punishment, to win games. Dixon\u2019s athletes sprint at maximum speeds multiple times each week. They hit game-day intensity without grinding through endless conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToughness isn\u2019t about who can suffer the longest,\u201d Dixon says. \u201cIt\u2019s about who can execute their task under pressure at full speed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/coachandcoordinator.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/riverside_brad_dixon-sbf_coach_and-coordinat.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Healthier, Happier, and Faster Athletes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since adopting this approach, Dixon\u2019s program has thrived. Injuries have dropped, team morale has climbed, and the roster has grown. His players leave practices fresh, confident, and ready to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dixon proves that precision and preparation win. Football toughness doesn\u2019t come from beating kids down. It comes from building them up\u2014and letting them perform at their best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sprint, recover, execute.
