Why we like it
FirstDown PlayBook is a drawing tool and program management system for coaches to organize their programs all in one place. Here is why we like it:
We like that it comes out of the box with a database of over 35,000 plays already drawn up. These templates provide a new coach with a tremendous head start in creating his first playbook. For veteran coaches, they offer an enormous time savings, and the drawing tool permits coaches to edit players, lines, symbols, colors, etc. as well as save frequently used formations and routes to create a customized playbook quickly.
We like that it’s scheme agnostic. No matter what system you run and no matter what systems you face throughout the season, FirstDown PlayBook comes with those plays and formations built-in and is equipped to adjust to whatever new idea coaches come up with next.
We like the addition of video clips. A new feature to FirstDown PlayBook, coaches can now pair their drawings with YouTube and Hudl videos to illustrate what they are looking for out of each play. This component transforms the playbook into a teaching tool and can become part of the game plan presentations to players.
We like that it’s built by a former NFL coach. FirstDown PlayBook founder Charlie Coiner created this tool to service exactly what coaches need. His perspective is built into all elements of FirstDown PlayBook, all the way down to the detailed notes from NFL coaches included in pre-drawn offense, defense, and special teams plays.
We like that it’s a hub for your entire program. In addition to creating a custom, quality playbook, coaches can create scout cards, wristband sheets, and practice scripts with a few keystrokes. Coaches can also easily share playbooks with middle school coaches and all the way down to the youth level to strengthen feeder programs.
We like the unique use cases we’ve heard about. In a recent Coach and Coordinator Podcast episode, Chad Johnson, state champion head coach at Mission Viejo High School in California, shared how he uses FirstDown PlayBook to conduct virtual 7 on 7’s, as well as how he uses it during practice. So it’s not just a playbook, and coaches are imaging new ways to deploy this tool all the time.
