On this episode of The Art of Practice, presented by GoRout, Keith Grabowski is joined by Dan Friend, offensive line coach at Morris Community High School and a member of the GoRout team, to discuss how coaches can create practices that better prepare players for the speed and demands of game day.
The conversation starts with a problem every staff faces: limited practice time. When coaches are spending reps getting scout players aligned, managing cards, correcting substitutions, or waiting for the next look, practice loses its flow. Friend explains why those delays don’t just cost reps. They can also take away the urgency and focus coaches are trying to create.
Friend and Grabowski discuss ways to make scout-team work more valuable by connecting opponent concepts to terminology and techniques players already understand. Instead of asking developmental players to simply follow lines on a card, coaches can use those reps to continue teaching and preparing younger players for future roles.
