Game Planning Tips: Building a Defensive Toolbox with Cover 6 Concepts

Coaching with Purpose

Before talking football, John Loose always takes a moment to explain the “why.” In particular, when coaching cover 6 defense football, he believes in making the purpose clear upfront.

Coach Loose and his wife Marianne are the founders of Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation, created in honor of their daughter, Lauren, who continues to inspire coaches and families through the foundation’s mission to fund pediatric brain tumor research and cancer services.

“We’ve raised more than $3 million — every dollar going directly to research and families in need. Everyone involved volunteers their time, and it’s all made possible because of the coaches who give back.”

That same purpose-driven mindset guides how Loose coaches defense: with clarity, adaptability, and selflessness — putting players in positions to succeed and taking stress off of them when the system demands it.

Shifting the Stress

Loose starts his Cover 6 Toolbox presentation by framing one key idea: in football, you can’t eliminate stress — but you can move it.

“Sometimes the stress is on your corners. Sometimes it’s on your safeties or your linebackers. The key is knowing how to move that stress around to make the quarterback and coordinator uncomfortable.”

His Cover 6 structure allows flexibility between field and boundary while keeping teaching consistent. By adjusting fits and vision keys, the defense can protect vulnerable positions and still maintain structure.

Cover 6 Overview

Loose breaks the field into two halves:

  • Field Side: typically plays quarters coverage, maintaining depth and vision.
  • Boundary Side: uses Cover 2 principles, giving the corner protection and help inside.

This hybrid shell helps Army handle both spread spacing and condensed sets without constantly changing calls.

Base Rules:

  • The Sam linebacker fits inside the run unless tagged otherwise.
  • The corner stays out of the fit to reroute and funnel vertical routes.
  • The safety plays “quarterback to one, back to quarterback” — reading depth and adjusting based on offensive flow.

“Depth is your friend. Don’t cheat the read. Play like a center fielder — see the ball, break on the throw.”

Adapting to Formations

Loose emphasizes adaptability, especially versus 3×1 formations.
In that look, the Mike linebacker becomes responsible for controlling #3, while the safety provides overlap and help on verticals.

“When we get 3×1, we’re taking stress off the corner to the boundary, but we’re adding it somewhere else. That’s the balance of football.”

Through simple tags, Army can toggle between:

  • “Keep the Sam in the fit” – protects the run while corners reroute.
  • “Corner in the fit” – adds an extra run defender versus zone teams, taking pressure off the Sam.

“I’d do both if I could — and you can, with clear rules and communication. All you need is a tag.”

High School Application

Loose often reminds coaches that Cover 6 is ideal for high school football due to the wider hash marks and shorter boundary throws.

“If I were coaching high school ball, I’d absolutely run a version of Cover 6. The hashes make the boundary throw shorter, and you can dictate where the quarterback wants to go with the football.”

That same concept-driven system — not call volume — is what allows Army to play fast, adapt quickly, and finish top of their conference in multiple defensive categories.

Key Takeaway

You can’t take stress out of defense — but you can move it.
By teaching flexibility, alignment, integrity, and situational awareness, Coach Loose gives his players the tools to play fast and confidently, no matter the formation.

“Football is about taking the stress off your players and putting it back on the offense.”
