“Pass Protection for Dummies”: How Indiana Safeties Prepare for Third Down

Indiana Safeties Coach Adams begins third-down teaching with a simple internal presentation titled “Pass Protection for Dummies.” The goal is straightforward: make sure defenders understand what they’re looking at. (note – this presentation was given at Lauren’s First and Goal while Coach Adams was the DC at Villanova)

If defensive players do not understand protection, they cannot maximize their effectiveness.

When a defender understands:

  • What protection is being presented
  • Where the slide is going
  • Who is responsible for blocking him

He can rush with purpose.

If you don’t know where your one-on-one is coming from, how can you win it?

Educate first. Attack second.

The Weakest Part of Protection

Adams repeats one core teaching point:

The weakest part of protection is the man’s side.

That is where:

  • The back is isolated.
  • Communication can break down.
  • Matchups are defined

Modern third-down defense isn’t just about defensive line pressure. Safeties are:

  • Insert blitzers
  • Late pressure players
  • Disguise pieces
  • Coverage adjusters

But none of that works if they don’t understand how the offense is protecting.

Championship Third Down Defense

Too many third-down installs jump straight to:

  • Exotic pressure packages
  • Simulated blitzes
  • Coverage disguises

Adams flips it.

If your players do not understand protection, you are leaving production on the field.

Protection education should come before pressure installation.

When players know who is responsible for them, they play faster and attack with conviction.

That is how drives end.
