2 Minute Clinic: Rob Everett-Read 2 Quarters (Cover 9) vs. 2 Removed
In this 2 Minute Clinic, Coach Rob Everett delves into Cover 9 versus 2 removed which is a great way for defenders in coverage to relate to threats and not merely cover grass while defending. Read 2 is a part of the Quarters family and does not fall under the Cover 2 umbrella of coverage. Read 2 simply means that the pod of defenders comprising the corner, overhang, and safety are all reading the number two receiver. Most simply put and easiest for players to understand , “number two tells me what to do.”

The rules of Read 2 versus 2 removed are as follows:
Corner:
-
If #2 goes vertical, over #1
-
If #2 goes out, under #1
-
If #2 goes in, under #1
Overhang:
-
If #2 goes vertical, wall #2 look for #3
-
If #2 goes out, squeeze #2, eyes to #1
-
If #2 goes in, carry #2
Safety:
-
If #2 goes vertical, over #2
-
If #2 goes out, over #1
-
If #2 goes in, over #1
Player pods can rep these responses to the number 2 receiver so that their reactions become second nature. The result is a situation versus 2 removed that always gives the defense numbers.
